For many of the Romantic era composers, the writing of symphonies presented problems, especially with the use of sonata form. The great symphonic composers like Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and even Bruckner used themes when they used sonata form while the Romantics used melodies. What created the problem was the differences between a theme and a melody.
